MOUNT KENYA NATIONAL PARK
Mount Kenya is a broad,large symmetrical volcano cone whose diameter at the base is about 12 km it was formed between 2.6 and 3.1 million years ago by eruptions of successive layers of volcanic lava and agglomerate from a central vent in the earth surface. Mount Kenya is climbed at all times of year if possible however it is best to try to avoid the two rainy seasons that usually start in mid March and lasts through till mid June. As on any high mountain, proper equipment is vital for a safe and enjoyable climb. Even with porters, climbers should carry some basic equipment with them at all times, including rain gear, spare jersey, water and first aid kit. High altitude problems are caused through the inability of the human body to adjust to a through various forms to the often more fatal pulmonary and cerebral oedemus (Hape and Hace) the later being less common. There are three different route commonly used up the mountain i.e Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria rute.rapid gain in Altitude problems range from mild cases of acute mountain sickness experienced to some extent by most climbers.
Day 1: Nairobi – Castle Lodge 1500M-2081M
Drive from Nairobi to Kimunye shopping center by transport. The important six (6) kms acclimatization walk we lead you through a part of the equatorial rain forest, you however can be entertained by varieties of game including the black and white colobus monkeys, Elephant and even buffaloes if lucky. Dinner and overnight at the famous Castle Mountain Lodge (2081m)
Day 2: Castle Lodge - Kamweti 2081M-2650M
Leave the famous Castle lodge after breakfast for Kamweti. This is through last part of the equatorial rain forest to the beginning of the bamboo zone. The views are just amazing and the experience is unbelievable, lunch, dinner and overnight at upper Kamweti guesthouse (2650m)
Day 3: Kamweti – Sagana Campsite 2500M-3150M
Start early enough after breakfast ready for 15km trekking; this is through the beautiful and undisturbed bamboo zone where the real trekking starts. Lunch on the way, dinner and overnight at Sagana campsite.
Day 4: Sagana Campsite – Thegu Camp 3150M-4000M
Start by steep climbing from Sagana to join the fragile moorland. The experience is just wonderful and the views are just amazing, with the special mountain plant that never grow below 3500m. Lunch enroute, dinner and overnight at Thegu camp (3850m)
Day 5: Thegu Camp – Mackinders Camp 4000M-4300M
Breakfast and depart Thegu camp for Mackinder’s camp. With full time peaks views infront of you, Its13kms trekking through wonderful and fragile moorland. Slow pace rhythm is highly recommended in this day. Packed lunch on the way, dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s camp (4300m)
Day 6: Mackinders Camp – Point Lenana – Majors Camp 4300M-4985M-4000M
Pre-dawn continental breakfast and shoot for the summit around 3 a.m. The three hours trekking leads you to point Lenana through Austrian so as to be at the summit at 6.15 time to enjoy the African sunrise and a chance to see Kilimanjaro to the south about 316 kms away. After this magic experience, it’s then a careful descend to Austrian hut again for the real breakfast before proceeding to Major’s camp. Lunch enroute dinner and overnight at the Major’s camp (4000m)
Day 7 Majors Camp – Road Head - Nairobi 4000m-1500m (Nrb)
Last breakfast and start descending towards the road head. The three hours walk will eventually leave you at the west Marania camp (road head) for transfer back to civilization, Lunch at Nanyuki proceeding to Nairobi where the tour ends.
